What Is Speaky Language Exchange?
Speaky is a language exchange community like Italki, Hellotalk or Verbling where you can connect with other language learners easily. It’s extremely easy-to-use and you’ll be can start practicing your target language right away.
Let me show you how it works and how it makes language learning easy and enjoyable for you.
How Does Speaky Work?
You can use Speaky on a computer on their website or by downloading the Speaky app to your smartphone. You can sign up in 5 seconds by using your Facebook or Google+ profile. Then you just choose what is your native language and what language you want to learn and you are ready to get started.
My native language is Finnish and I wanted to learn German so my profile on Speaky looks like this:
Then the app shows me all people who are German native speakers and want to learn Finnish. I’m always surprised how many people want to learn Finnish even though it’s just a small language. If your native language is English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese or some other language, there will always be tons of people who would like to learn it.
It also shows all non-native speakers who already speak or want to learn your target languages so you can practice with them as well. Take a look at the picture below:
The idea with language exchanges is that you teach your language partner your native language while he teaches your target language. Then it’s fun and beneficial for both of you. Based on my experience you’ll sometimes develop good friendships with other people as well. So, it’s like two birds with one stone.

What Are the Main Benefits Of Speaky Language Exchange App?
We have already talked about benefits of language exchanges on other articles here on LanguagesAreEasy.com but let me share a few reasons why I like Speaky:
- Easy-to-Use
Their app and website are very intuitive and easy-to-use for anyone. Even my grandmother could use them easily! 😉 You can have a look at their desktop view in the picture below. You see that it’s easy to navigate and everything is clear. On the left-hand side, you see, “Community” and “Messages”.
- Big Community – Easy to Find Language Exchange Partners
Speaky app has been tens of thousands of times (if not already hundreds of thousands of times when you are reading this) and the community is huge. It means that you can most likely always find a language exchange partner who wants to practice new languages with you or teach your target language.
- Beautiful Design and Platform
In my opinion, the Speaky platform looks great and modern. It’s nice to use it and everything is nicely laid out.
- Speaky Shows Immediately Who Are Online => Easy to Connect with People
A huge benefit of this app is that it shows you first the persons that are online at the moment. It makes it easier for you to start connecting with right away. You don’t need to send 10 messages to potential people who could be online in the future because you have an opportunity to connect with some people who are already online.
- You Can Make New Friends
This is, of course, the benefit of all language learning communities and platforms. I still wanted to mention this because I think it’s so cool and important benefit. I’ve got some very close friends through similar platforms like Speaky.
On the other hand, if your goal is just to learn languages without developing any friendships, that’s also fine. I saw that a text on one profile, “I am here just to learn languages.” This person made the goal clear in the profile. I personally see that friendships become as a bonus when you are doing something interesting like practicing languages together.
- You Can Choose Who Can Talk to You
In Speaky there is an interesting feature that allows you to choose freely who can talk to you and who can’t talk with you. If someone sends you message and you don’t want to talk with him/her, that’s completely fine. Once both of you have “approved”, you can connect. That’s a good feature because then you don’t need to care about people who would disturb you.
Speaky Points Feature – Motivates You to Be Active!
Speaky has an interesting feature on their app that motivates you to be more active within the community. I found it pretty cool and useful. I’m sure many other people like it as well. At the same time, it’s good for app creators because it encourages people to be more active within the community and use it even more. So, how does it work?
You will receive points always when you do certain actions within the community. You get points for example for:
- Completing your profile
- Starting conversations
- Inviting your friends
- Sending messages
- Etc.
After you have received enough points, you’ll receive badges as a reward. As far as I know, badges don’t have any specific application but they are just nice things to show that you have been active in the Speaky community.

Is Speaky Free?
Speaky is completely free to use. You just need to sign up and you are ready to do get started.
That being said, they also have a premium option available for those that want to upgrade their membership. Let me show you the details in the picture below:
Premium costs only 49,99€/year which makes around 4€/month so it’s very affordable. However, Speaky Premium isn’t even absolutely necessary. I used the app for completely free and it worked great.
Pros & Cons of Speaky:
Pros:
- Easy-to-use
- Large community => Easy to find language partners
- Beautiful and modern platform
- Mobile app available
Cons:
- Hard to find any cons. What do you think? All premium features aren’t free like on Italki.
Conclusion – Is Speaky Worth Trying?
Certainly, yes! When I tried Speaky for the first time, it only took like 2 minutes from downloading to connecting with the first persons inside the app. That is a clear benefit compared to some other language learning communities. On some of them, you just see a list of individuals inside the community but don’t know who is online or offline.
Then you would need to send many messages to find out who is still active and who isn’t. After finding out, you try to figure out the right time to practice for both of you and so on… On Speaky you don’t need to go through such long process because you can immediately connect with other language learners inside the app or website.
Speaking and using the language in practice is certainly one of the fastest ways to learn. If you are interested also in other ways to improve your pronunciation and speaking skills, take a look at this article where I give you 7 tips to take your speaking skills to the next level.

Have you used Speaky or other similar language exchange apps/websites?
Did it help you to learn languages more easily?
This is a great app for those people who are finding and want to meet native speakers around the world, I already know about this site before but until now I still didn’t try it. Maybe soon, after my Japanese class I’am gonna use this app.
Speaky is the perfect app to instantly learn, practice and exchange languages with people around the world but I want to ask if it has a joining fee? This will definitely help those people who want to work in other country but before that they should learn the native language in that country first.
As I mentioned in the article, Speaky doesn’t have any joining fee so you can use it for completely free.
I’m sure this app would help you to improve with Japanese 🙂
Oh that is such a great news! I just want to share another thing, this is for those who are anime lovers, Why don’t we use this speaky language exchange right now to learn Japanese. So next time we don’t no longer need to read the subtitle of that anime just to understand what we are watching. Learning Japanese has also an advantage on watching anime, aside from you can understand it more, you can already reply to those Japanese comments under the anime film.
Yes, there are a huge number of Japanese speakers on Speaky and on Italki.
I just checked out the link that you replied ‘Itaki’, And it is just wow, I thought learning Nihonggo (Japanese) can only learn at school and for us to go to the school we have to enroll first of course but in my state I cant afford enrolling to a Japanese class that is why I am very amused when I checked out Itaki.
Wow is the first word that bumped into my mind after reading this article on speaky app. This is a very easy and wonderful way to learn one’s desired language at virtually no cost at all, but to simply download the application and get on with the learning process with ease.
It’s true when you say it brings about making of new friends, and my question is why wouldn’t it? When you are conversing with someone on daily basis exchanging and the native language of both your country, you are definitely going to be attached as good friends.
Yeah, Speaky and other language exchange communities are awesome. I remember when I started my “language learning journey” but I didn’t know that this kind of apps exist. I’m so happy that I found Italki back then because it helped me so much with learning Spanish and French.
Yeah, I find it very amazing that such application now exist simply as a result of technological improvements in our world today. It’s been helpful on several other fronts and not just language learning but let me not drift away from the subject matter here with going on about other benefits of technological advancements.
Italki? Have you done a review on it here as well or should I probably go look it up using Google and understand exactly how that works as well?
You can take a look at my Italki review here. There’s also a search bar on the right hand side on the top of my website where you could have found it quickly.
Alright Roope, thanks so much for this. I will take a good look at the review and get back to you once I’m done.
Thanks once more.
Hi!! for months I have problem of getting and sending message on speaky… I tried to solve it but it didn’t work??
I recommend contacting their support team. For me (and thousands of other people) it has worked perfectly without any problem so there has probably been just some technical error.
WOW! i think that this is one of the best app! after i read this article i would surely download it and for a couple i would go back here to say on my experience. Learning different language is great skill that everyone should have because you will not be afraid to travel in different countries. Thanks for this.
You’re welcome! 🙂
wow, this seems to be a great program. I am going to try this. My native language is Nepali, I can teach Nepali easily. I want to exchange Nepali language with French or Spanish. I hope I can find people interested in learning my language.
I’m sure there are a huge number of French and Spanish speakers on Speaky. You’ll enjoy using it.
It is an excellent platform for getting in contact with other language learner and there are a lot of people who are really helpful.
I like the wesite version as it allows me to type easily and quickl. The big draw back is that there is no real documentation as to how things work. The Android app is intuitive, but the website version I still do not understand… I feel stupid when I cannot send pictures i nthe website version.
So anyone who knows how to send pictures and even show badges for a user, please let me know! 😀
